Choosing effective study material, doing routine studies and maintaining positive approach are vital elements to score good marks in a medical entrance exam. With abundant study materials available in the market, students often waste their time deciding the right options. Many of them end up choosing the wrong study materials.
Experts suggest that medical aspirants, while making their preparation plan, must pick NCERT Books of classes XI and XII as they focus on fundamentals and help candidates with basic concepts. As a part of a NEET Preparation series, we bring to you ‘Why NCERT books are important for NEET?’
Check below the top four benefits of studying NCERT books if you want to ace NEET with a good score:
Simple language:
NCERT books are written in a simple language which is easy to understand. Also, these books are lucid and direct in their approach which makes it easier for students to understand the technical aspects of topics like kinetics or energy. Emphasising on the importance of these books, Khushi Tiwari, AIR 2, AIPMT 2015 shares that, “I have found NCERT books to be very simple and helpful, especially in Biology and Physics subjects. Also, I found them easy in comprehending concepts as compared to other books. I used to read these books regularly along with other study materials.”
Strong basics and fundamentals:
NCERT books cover the basics and fundamentals on all topics of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Tejaswini Jha, who was the highest scorer of AIPMT in 2014, had revealed that NCERT books helped in clearing his concepts on multiple topics. “NCERT is the best way to clear your basics and concepts in all the three subjects. Once the basics are clear, scoring high in AIPMT becomes easier,” he says. Another benefit is that once the student clears her concepts through the NCERT books, it would become easier for her to attempt practice tests and refer to other study materials on NEET.
As Tejaswin puts it, “One must study NCERT books seriously along with other reference materials to score good marks in the entrance exam.”
Diagram-based questions:
NCERT books on Biology comprise of diagram-based questions which helps students in understanding the subject and be in sync with the pattern of the exam. There are a total 90 questions in Biology, many of which are diagram based. Hence, NCERT books come in handy when preparing for these types of questions. Further, NCERT books have lot of flowcharts to effectively remember biological processes. Sharing their success story, Bathinda twins, Sahil Bansal and Rahul Bansal, who cracked the AIPMT 2015 with 4th and 6th rank said, “Diagram based questions of NCERT books have helped us a lot in understanding the subject easily. We made it a point to complete the topic from NCERT text books. We also solved past years’ AIPMT question papers and took several mock tests.”
Direct questions from NCERT Books:
One of the biggest benefits of studying from NCERT books is that many questions in NEET are either directly fetched from these books or follow a similar pattern. The best example here is numerical based questions, which have been heavily influenced by the NCERT syllabus in the last few years. In fact, experts and toppers alike recommend aspirants to study the NCERT books thoroughly. “My plan to complete the NCERT syllabus worked for me as many questions in the test were similar to that covered in NCERT,” says Parv Mehta, AIR 7 of AIPMT 2015.
According to coaching experts, every topic of the NEET syllabus is important in the exam, however, the question papers of the previously held medical entrance examination comprised a variety of questions from important topics including Mechanics, Heat & Thermodynamics, Modern Physics and Optics from Physics, Inorganic and Organics from Chemistry, and Cell Structure, Genetics & Evolution and Plant Physiology from Biology.
